How to get started

Turning the dream of Living on Water into a reality is as easy as 1, 2, 3. 

The process has been made a simple as possible by Scottish Canals, who are the Marketing Agents for the Living on Water Initiative.

Scottish Canals, will be able to provide you with the information and guidance you need to choose where you want to live, lease your mooring and buy or rent your boat.

To get started, simply follow the steps below:

Choose a location

First decide where you want to live, so click here to take a look at the available locations and see which one is for you.

Things to consider:
  • You can arrange a site visit.
  • Check that you are happy with the on-site facilities.
  • New locations will be available soon.

Lease a mooring

Once you've picked your location, you need to lease your mooring. Click here to find out how to do it.

Things to consider:
  • If you already have a boat, you must check its suitability.

Buy or rent a boat

You'll need a boat to live in, work on or rent out. Click here to find out what the options are and how to buy or rent.

Things to consider:
  • Your boat should be appropriate to your mooring.
  • Marine finance or mortgages are available.
  • Boats must be in good order and well-maintained.
